Electric Cars

Electric cars show up in the news all the time.

There are several reasons for the continuing interest in these vehicles: Electric cars create less pollution than gasoline -powered cars, so they are an environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles (especially in cities).

Any news story about hybrid cars usually talks about electric cars as well.

a lot of attention right now in the news.

  • Electric cars found popularity among well-heeled customers who used them as city cars , where their limited range was less of a disadvantage.
  • Electric cars often have less maximum range on one charge than cars powered by fossil fuels, and they can take considerable time to recharge.
  • Solar cars are electric cars that derive most or all of their electricity from built in solar panels.
  • Vehicles powered by fuel cells are electric cars, and fuel cells are getting a lot of attention right now in the news.
  • While an electric car’s power source is not explicitly an on-board battery , electric cars with motors powered by other energy sources are generally referred to by a different name: an electric car powered by sunlight is a solar car , and an electric car powered by a gasoline generator is a form of hybrid car .

Solar cars are electric cars that derive most or all of their electricity from built in solar panels. At the Frankfurt Auto Show this month, electric cars are the new black. Everyone from BMW ( BMWG.DE ) to an Atlanta startup called Wheego Electric Cars is trotting out an electric model or two, boasting of their ample features and unique promise.

Is it REALLY dead?

Who Killed the Electric Car? – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

While few American consumers may have ever heard of the electric cars in California, those that have were not necessarily near critical mass for this new technology to really take off, YET. Because thanks to lower gas prices and infatuation with SUVs, few people have actively sought out this new technology. While some were fans (as chronicled in the film, Who Killed the Electric Car), many more needed time to consider the advantages and disadvantages of these new cars whether freedom from oil or with the perceived limitations of a city car with 100 mile range.

Costly batteries put these cars out of reach for most consumers, and infrastructure isn’t currently in place to allow owners to plug in and charge up cars when they’re away from home.

But beyond the hip music and snazzy displays, electric cars face some sobering realities that make them vehicles of the future rather than of the present. The biggest issues are price and usability. Costly batteries put these cars out of reach for most consumers, and infrastructure isn’t currently in place to allow owners to plug in and charge up cars when they’re away from home. Add to that speed and range limitations with electric technology, and it’s clear the electric future won’t come overnight.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t cause for excitement about electric cars, which offer the possibility of zero-emissions driving for a potentially large number of city dwellers. It does mean, though, that consumers will have to be patient.

Electric vehicles are on the road in many functions, including electric cars , electric trolleybuses , electric buses , electric trucks , electric bicycles , electric motorcycles and scooters , neighborhood electric vehicles , golf carts , milk floats , and forklifts . Off-road vehicles include electrified all-terrain vehicles and tractors .

Electric power has a long history of use in spacecraft . The power sources used for spacecraft are batteries, solar panels and nuclear power. Current methods of propelling a spacecraft with electricity include the arcjet rocket , the electrostatic ion thruster , the Hall effect thruster , and Field Emission Electric Propulsion . A number of other methods have been proposed, with varying levels of feasibility .

When you are using power in your EV the battery will deplete, it is just a matter of how much. For example, sitting in traffic without the heat or air conditioning on will cause minimal battery drain. However, using high heat on a cool day or high A/C on a hot day or the defrost function will cause the battery to drain more quickly.

The fixed nature of a rail line makes it relatively easy to power electric vehicles through permanent overhead lines or electrified third rails , eliminating the need for heavy onboard batteries. Electric locomotives , electric trams/streetcars/trolleys , electric light rail systems , and electric rapid transit are all in common use today, especially in Europe and Asia.

A battery-only electric vehicle or all-electric vehicle derives all its power from its battery packs and thus has no internal combustion engine, fuel cell , or fuel tank . Sometimes, all-electric vehicles are referred to as BEVs (although a plug-in hybrid is also a battery electric vehicle).

One Response to “Electric Cars”

This is all good and gravy, but another major concern is the fact that battery making is not the most environmentally friendly manufacturing process. Moreover, it really, really frustrates me to see how terribly wrong GM was at pulling the EV1′s in the ’90′s. They could have been leaders in the industry by this point, but instead they have to play catch-up with Toyota. And frankly, even with the Volt I feel like they have a long way to go before they get even close to Toyota’s success. And overall, the key to better efficiencies overall has to do with WEIGHT. Why can’t car companies focus on cutting out the fat! The 1998 Honda Civic, a 4 door family sedan weighed 2500 pounds. It’s 2011 and not even a sports car can come close…A BMW Z4 convertible with the big engines weighs 3500 pounds. Terrible…
